Macha Cookies
Here is a recipe for Macha cookies sent to me by Mikako , the sister of my friend Ryoko , who lived with us for 12 weeks last year. Mikako says not to eat too many at one sitting as Macha is high in caffeine.
MACHA COOKIES
3.5 oz flour
1 1/2 tablespoons Macha Green Tea powder
2.5 oz Powdered almonds (ground almonds)
1.5 oz butter
1.5 oz shortening
(I didn't have any shortening so used 3 ozs unsalted butter)
2.5 oz icing (powder) sugar
a little milk ( I used about 50ml)
Place butter and shortening in bowl and whisk until white.
Add sugar and beat.
Sift flour, almond powder, and Macha tea powder into same bowl and stir with a wooden spoon.
If it is too dry add a little milk.
Shape into triangle (or square or cylinder), wrap in plastic wrap and place in freezer for 1 hour.
Preheat oven to 180 (350) degrees.
Remove plastic wrap and slice cookie dough.
Place cookies on parchment lined baking trays.
Bake for 12 - 15 minutes.
Makes about 40 cookies.

I just bought a bag of green tea last Friday on our shopping day, but I don't recall it was Macha. I believe it must be more handy to have green tea powder. They look nice.

Arfi - you need to use the powder for these not the leaves.

Oo, I've had macha flavoured sweeties before, they're lovely! My dad brought me back some macha powder from Korea the last time I went, but I can't bear to use it as when I made a cup of tea with it, it tasted...fishy.
Will have to track down a source somewhere though, those cookies look way too tasty to miss!

Ellie - how strange for it to taste of fish!
Joey - Try a Japanese food shop for macha. Please do join us in the next Donna Hay Day.
