Fleurs Place

Dsc_0230
I'm almost reluctant to tell you about this restaurant. The last thing we want is for this little fishing village to be spoilt with camper vans full of tourists.  At least not until I've celebrated my next significant birthday ending in a zero there.  There aren't a lot of options when it comes to accommodation.  The village has one motel, one camper van park, one tavern, one gallery and  when you can't go any further before ending up in the water there you will find Fleurs Place.  The no apostrophe is deliberate. As Fleur says the name just happened and it happened without an apostrophe.

Dsc_0233

New Zealand has this rule  that says you can't buy fish fresh off a boat.   All commercial fisheries must land their catch through a licensed fish receiver.   So even if your restaurant is opposite the wharf where the fish is landed it will by pass your door and go to the nearest big city to the fish receiver, from which you can buy it and then it travels all the way back to the restaurant opposite the wharf where the fish was first landed.  How silly is that?

Dsc_0207

However the very clever  Fleur has obtained her own license and the fish comes off the boat and into her restaurant kitchen  and onto your plate while still as fresh as it can possibly be.  And it shows.  This  is how fish should taste.  It is served simply on a bed of vegetables with a sauce served alongside in a paua shell.  I followed it up with the best Bread and Butter pudding I've ever tasted..... and I make a pretty mean one myself.

Dsc_0232

So this is the front door and this is on the back of the front door.

Dsc_0237

For the best table upstairs  with an ocean view ask for Gwen's table as in Gwyneth . It's where she sat when she dined there when filming Sylvia. I didn't ask where Rick  sat but there is a choice of downstairs or upstairs dining. The  small bar downstairs is a great place to sit after dinner and meet the locals. In summer I could see myself drinking at the outdoor tables until the staff go home.

Dsc_0201

I was up early the next morning.... and from our motor home window I could see the lights were on in Fleurs Place as the staff prepared for breakfast.  I showered, dressed and took an early morning walk to get a few sunrise photos of the area.

Dsc_0234

And a few photos of the rustic charm of Fleurs Place.

Dsc_0240

Dsc_0247

The evening photos of our dinner didn't turn out as well as I hoped but here are a couple from breakfast.

I'm Back

Dsc_0237_2

I ate here too. Come back tomorrow to see where in New Zealand this place is.

Wild Food - Carpetbag Snake, I Mean Steak

Dsc_0007_3

My friend Bron   is the originator and host of the blog event Wild Food . This months challenge was Edible Reptile.

Wikipedia  points to the Carpetbag snake  Steak as a uniquely  Australian dish from the 1950S.  However Timeline  claims it is of American origin with a recipe written in the US in 1941.

I remember them  being  popular in the late seventies but haven't seen them on a menu in years.  They were the original surf and turf - steak stuffed with seafood.   In this case a piece of Scotch Fillet stuffed with oysters and a dash of Worcestershire Sauce . Sadly it is not oyster season in New Zealand so this Carpetbag snake Steak is stuffed with mussels. Because it is so seventies I went retro and served it with the jacket potato baked in foil and green beans. Some recipes suggest a squeeze of lime juice to serve.

There doesn't seem to be any connection to snakes  in the naming of the dish. There isn't actually a real snake called a carpetbag steak  snake but there is a carpet snake, a type of python.

There was a snake character in an early Australian animated TV show called Crafty Carson Carpetbag.

Thanks to Bron for hosting Wild Food.

Hay Hay It's Donna Day #12 - Caesar Salad

Dsc_0004
This week I just happened to see a Jamie Oliver show where he made a Caesar Salad. One thing he did which appealed to me was to roast a chicken over the torn up bread to create the croutons. All the juices and sticky bits that normally drop down onto the bottom of the pan end up on the bread. Saves making croutons and because they are torn pieces it looks quite rustic. Jamie roasted his chicken in a wood fired oven in his garden. Sadly I only have an electric oven so my chicken was roasted in an electric oven in my kitchen.

I didn't have any cos lettuce but I did have acorn lettuce so that became the base. Then I just added some of the roasted chicken which I shredded roughly and some of the rustic torn croutons, drizzled with dressing and a few slivers of parmigiana cheese.

The dressing is made by pounding a couple of anchovies, a little garlic, some grated parmigiana cheese, oil and lemon juice. (three parts oil to 1 part lemon juice).   I didn't follow a specific recipe just judged by eye  the amounts I needed to feed four people.

Katie at Other Peoples Food is the host of this months Hay Hay It's Donna Day.  If you want to join in check out her post and get your entry to her by 27th May.

Ten Days On The Road

Dsc_0139_2
The South  Island has plenty  of  good  vineyards  and we plan on visiting a few over the next ten days.  Tomorrow we head to the South Island and will spend 10 days travelling in this motor home  from  Maui.  It is big and has panoramic windows. Picture us  backed up to the view, sitting at the table with a glass of pinot noir in the warmth of our temporary home.  It even has  a toilet and shower and heating....and two beds so we can have one each and we won't even miss our king size bed at home.

For me, one highlight will be stopping off at Fleur's Place   in Moeraki for dinner. We might even stay in the area  an extra day so we can have breakfast and lunch  there also.

The other highlight will be meeting fellow bloggers Mary,     BronPaul  at various stages of the trip.

While I'm away there is plenty of reading and recipes  for you at the A Taste Of Yellow  round up. I've also added some photos of our recent trip in the North Island to My Foto Blog.

See you at the end of May.

LiveSTRONG With A Taste of Yellow Roundup

Dsc_0007_2
When I was diagnosed with cancer in June 2004 I was far from home. Bryan and I had just spent 6 weeks walking across Spain on the Camino de Santiago .  On our last night in Santiago de Compostela  we went out for dinner ( I ate Jamon Iberico ) with a group of friends we had made on our walk. After dinner we decided it would be a good idea to walk past the cathedral one more time, stop off in a bar for one last glass of  Cava before going our separate ways in the morning. In front of the cathedral is a spot marked on the ground where if you lay down on your back with your head toward the cathedral you  get a perfect shot of the cathedral. Thinking this was a good idea I lay down, took my perfect  photo and as I got up a sharp pain shot through my right side.  Appendicitis everyone said. We continued on to the bar and sat drinking and reminiscing until early in the morning, all the time I had this dull ache in my side. The next day we headed in to Portugal for a couple of days on the way to Madrid where we planned to spend a week before returning home to New Zealand. I thought I should see a doctor before getting on a plane in case it was appendicitis. We arrived in the village of Ponte de Lima , found  a delightful little room above a restaurant for a couple of nights, then went  looking for a doctor.  The next thing the local doctor had me in the back of an ambulance and I found myself speeding off to Viana do Castelo   which had a bigger hospital and surgeons.  Within 24 hours I'd had life saving surgery. A few days later I was given the news I had cancer. On that day my whole life changed.

Back in Auckland and undergoing chemotherapy,  a friend who works for Nike, brought around a Lance Armstrong  book for me to read.  That year I watched the Tour de France  for the first time, and watched Lance win his 6th Tour.   The following year I didn't care if I woke the rest of the family, (in the southern hemisphere it plays live on TV in the middle of the night), as I jumped up and down screaming for Lance and his seventh Tour win.   For  many of us diagnosed with cancer, Lance has become a hero in our own fight to overcome  the disease.

Today I'm still fighting the disease and I hope one day to be given the "all clear" from my oncologist.

I thank you all for supporting A Taste Of Yellow. This event was my own little thank you to Lance for the strength he has given me over the past three years. I couldn't have done it without you....and to those of you supporting family members or friends  - they can't do it without you either.

Here is my round up of  the delicious yellow inspired food created by the greatest bunch of bloggers in the world - all 143 149 of you.  Many of you shared stories, both heart breaking and  heart warming. I thank you for the hope you have given me. I hope those people  fighting cancer themselves or are supporting  a loved one  will also gain hope from your stories. I decided against mentioning every cancer story in the round up as I'd like you to visit the entries to find them.
