Blood Orange Sorbet

Sorbet-a
How pretty is this? Not only pretty pink but tasty also.

A Thermomix recently found it's way to my  kitchen. A little snippet on David Lebovitz and I was off googling Thermomix.  A  couple of emails, a phone call and suddenly Eva was demonstrating and cooking us lunch on the Thermomix machine.

The Thermomix replaces a myriad of kitchen appliances which is perfect for those of us who have downsized to an apartment with a smaller kitchen and less cupboard space.

You can read all about my new best friend over at the Thermomix site.   I'd rather talk about the wonderful Blood Orange Sorbet I made today. This is how quick and easy it is to make sorbet in a Thermomix.

1. Place sugar in bowl and mill for 10 seconds on speed 9
2. Add the fruit followed by 1 tray of ice and egg white. Slowly turn speed dial to 10.
3. Add the remaining ice after 20 seconds and continue on speed 10 for 40 seconds.
4. Serve immediately or place in freezer until ready to serve.

If you haven't tried blood orange you must. The taste is very different to a conventional orange.

Weekend Words - An Old Chinese Proverb

It seems many of us who have been blogging for a couple of years have lost the urge to blog every morsel that passes our lips.

If that is you I'm inviting you to join in my Weekend Words posts. Each weekend I plan to select some words and take a photo to go with the words. It might be a piece of poetry, a proverb, maybe a quote from a movie or perhaps even a quote from a politician. It doesn't have to involve food, although it may if you wish.

There are no rules, no hosting and no round ups.

Be creative, be funny, be inspiring...be whatever you want...... and have fun.

Candid Camera on Hungry People

 Boy-with-icecream-2
I've been wanting to use my recent birthday present lens for some candid photos of people eating and drinking. Yesterday I spend a half an hour people watching   at a market. You can see the entire set by going to my  Flickr account here.

I've checked and it is okay to publish photos of people taken in a public place, without their permission, provided they aren't shown in a detrimental manner. If your photo is shown and you object it can be removed.

Lemon Cake From 2006

Lemon cake
It may look as if I've lost my blogging mojo.  I haven't, I'm just very busy. One of my best buddies from Perth is visiting.  I'm happy to say we are having as much fun shopping and going to the movies as we did when we were 16. We just need to stop and have coffee more.

This is the cake I made on this day in 2006.

PS Thanks to everyone who has dropped by recently and left comments. I apologise I haven't had the time to respond.

Here is the David Herbert recipe which I first discovered when I had lunch at Arfi's house.

Lemon Cake
by: David Herbert

185g unsalted butter, softened
3/4 cup caster sugar
1 Tbs finely grated lemon zest
3 eggs, lightly beaten
1 1/2 cup self-raising flour, sifted
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup lemon juice

Preheat the oven to 160C. Grease a 23 x 12 cm loaf tin and line the base with baking paper. In an electric mixer, beat the butter, caster sugar and lemon zest for 2-3 minutes, or until soft and well mixed. Gradually add the beaten eggs, alternating with a spoonful of the flour, mixing well after each addition. Fold in the remaining flour and mix gently until smooth. Spoon the batter into the prepared loaf tin and smooth the surface. Bake for 50-60 minutes (my oven only took 45 minutes), or until golden and firm to the touch. A skewer inserted in the centre should come out clean. Turn out onto a wire rack.
Mix together the sugar and lemon juice until just combined, without letting the sugar dissolve. Quickly spoon the sugar mixture over the top of the warm cake. The juice will sink into the cake and the sugar will form a crunchy topping

No time to post this week so here is what I ate on this day in 2006. Tomorrow we have friends arriving from Perth for a week of fun. Maybe I'll serve this for Sunday lunch.

Enjoy your weekend everyone.

Donna Day Pancakes with Blueberries and Raspberry Sauce

Blueberry-2

Suzana at  Home Gourmet, a second time winner of Hay Hay Its Donna Day, has chosen pancakes for the latest Hay Hay Its Donna Day.  Thanks for hosting a great theme SuzanaI served mine with a blueberry and raspberry sauce with a dollop of yogurt.

Pancakes

Makes 15

2 cups (250 g) plain flour, sifted
3 tsp baking powder, sifted
1/3 cup (85 g) caster sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 cup (375 ml) milk
75 g butter, melted
pinch of salt

Place the flour, baking powder and sugar in a bowl. Place the eggs, milk, and butter in a separate bowl and whisk until combined. Combine mixtures and whisk until smooth. (Add extra milk to get the right consistency, if necessary).

Heat a greased medium non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Pour 1/3 cup of the mixture into the pan and cook, in batches, until bubbles appear on the surface. Turn the pancakes and cook for 1 minute or until golden. Repeat with the remaining mixture.

Topping
1 cup blueberries
1/4 cup raspberry jam
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon cornflour

Place blueberries, raspberry jam and half the water in a small saucepan and heat through.
Mix cornflour with remaining water. Add to blueberry mixture and bring to boil and stir until mixture thickens.

Serve over pancakes with yogurt.

I'm off on holiday for a week. See you when I return. You have until the 8th September to get your pancake entries to Suzana.
